The 22 year old Greek champion, Maria Sakkari managed to celebrate a 2-1 victory against the Czech, Kristyna Pliskova and qualified to the third round of 2017 Wimbledon Championships.
After almost 2.5 hours of an impressive game (6-7, 6-4, 6-4), Maria Sakkari advanced for the second time in her career in a Grand Slam tournament.
In the beginning of the game, Maria seemed to lose the game in straight sets, as she was back in the score with 4-1 in the second set and Kristyna Pliskova had a break point for 5-1. Maria, however, did not lose her faith and managed to get five games in a row, after she had begun to read her opponent’s best service and to find her own hits and finally managed to take the crucial victory.
Maria Sakkari, is No. 101 in the world, and she had also qualified to the third round of the Australian Open. Furthermore, the Greek champion is the first Greek woman after Lena Daniilidou in 2005 to win the third round of Wimbledon.
Now the Greek champion will face the winner between Johanna Konta and Donna Vekic pair at 2017 Wimbledon’s round of 32.
