Guilty verdict for Thessaloniki man accused of shooting stray dog

A Thessaloniki court on Thursday returned a guilty verdict for a 54-year-old man who shot and killed a stray dog earlier in the week in Thessaloniki.

The court handed down a suspended sentence of two years imprisonment and a 5,300-euro fine. The 59-year-old appealed against the court ruling and was released.

The incident was reported at the west entrance of the port of Thessaloniki where, according to the man, he cultivates vegetables. He said the the dog had repeatedly caused damage to greenhouses in the area and created problems for local residents.

He also claimed that the same dog had attacked his daughter a few years ago and the defence submitted a note from a hospital to that effect, without, however, convincing the court of his innocence.
