Supreme Court upholds ruling for extradition of “Mr Bitcoin” to Russia

The Greek Supreme Court (Areios Pagos) confirmed a decision by an appeals court in Thessaloniki to extradite Alexander Vinnik, known as “Mr Bitcoin”, to Russia on electronic fraud charges.

The United States, Russia and France have separately issued extradition requests against him. In 2017 a US jury indicted Vinnik, who is held in Greece, on charges of money laundering.

The Greek Supreme Court, at an earlier ruling, upheld Vinnik’s extradition to the United States. On September 19, it is scheduled to discuss France’s extradition request.

The final extradition decision rests with the minister of justice.

Vinnik has requested that he be extradited to Russia, while his lawyer Elias Spyrliadis commented on Friday’s court decision that the minister of justice “now has another option of using (the ruling) to approve Vinnik’s extradition to Russia, which is his homeland anyway.”
