Two forest fires were raging in Zakynthos late on Thursday in the areas of Macherado and Koiliomenos, but the nearby villages were not under threat, authorities said.
The fire near Koiliomenos was the bigger of the two after having split into two parts. One part headed towards the village with the second part burning forest land, authorities said. Twenty fire fighters with ten vehicles were on site to put out the fire, with the help of an airplane and a helicopter.
At the second blaze in the area of Macherado, there were eight firefighters with four vehicles on hand to put out the fire.
Authorities added that the fires were fanned by strong winds, that could pick up through the night.
