Land where 26 people died has been illegally built on, fenced off

The land plot were 26 people died in fires in Mati last week had been fenced off illegally and included buildings without construction permits, said Alternate Environment Minister Sokratis Famellos on Wednesday.

Speaking in parliament, Famellos said that the land is classified as a public forest area which can only be used for the needs of bathers and any type of construction on it is forbidden.

“These are issues which should have been spotted by services. Not the services of the government, but of the local council. All of this must be used by the National Assembly so that it doesn’t happen again,” he said.
