Two charged with crime, misdemeanours over HAU attack

A prosecutor charged on Wednesday two people with a criminal offence and a series of misdemeanors in connection to the attacks on the building of the Hellenic American Union (HAU) in Athens.

A 26-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman had been detained by police after a group of people broke the HAU’s glass door with sledgehammers and threw flyers inside supporting jailed November 17 terrorist Dimitris Koufodinas on Tuesday. During a search in the woman’s home, police also found a gun, ammunition, a bulletproof vest, handgun holster and three gas masks.

The prosecutor charged them with the crime of theft and the misdemeanours of disturbing the peace, damaging property, illegally possessing a weapon, causing bodily harm and insubordination.

The incident at the HAU in Athens followed an attack at the institution’s premises in Thessaloniki on Monday, where a group of people spraypainted the walls with slogans in support of Koufodinas.
