Prokopis Pavlopoulos inaugurates care unit against abuse at children’s hospital

A new care unit for the safety of children was inaugurated at the Athens General Children’s Hospital “Pan. & Aglaia Kyriakou” on Tuesday, in a ceremony attended by President Prokopios Pavlopoulos.

The unit is named after Sofi Varvitsioti, who was a member of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (ELIZA) that initiated the process to create the unit.

A team of professionals, ranging from doctors and nurses to police and public prosecutors, will work together to detect cases of abused children.

“We see in front of us cases (of child abuse) growing in the community, something which was unknown until recently. Parents, who not only are not parents, but are not people either. This mentality is foreign, and I highlight this, to the tradition of the Greek family. But we must all work together, each person from his point, so that these cases – which are the exception – are completely eradicated,” said the president.
