PPC calls on farmers to pay their outstanding electricity bills

The Public Power Corporation (PPC) appealed on farmers and local organizations that manage irrigation systems on Thursday to settle their outstanding debts for electricity that reach 90 million euros.

Of the total outstanding amount, farmers are responsible for 50 million euros and organisations for 40 million euros, it noted.

PPC said that in general the debts have been incurred by strategic nonpayers who have the ability to settle their bills yet let them accumulate over the years, despite the fact the company had done all it could to help farmers settle. It added that electricity rates for farmers were extremely low compared to family or industry rates, and yet there were farmers with unpaid bills reaching five digits and organisations with seven-digit unpaid bills.
