Greek unemployment rate fell to 20.5 pct in Sept

The Greek unemployment rate fell to 20.5 pct of the workforce in September, from 20.7 pct in August and 23.2 pct in September 2016, according to Hellenic Statistical Authority’s announcement on Thursday.

In a monthly report, the statistics service mentioned that the unemployment among young people fell below 40 pct. The number of unemployed people totaled 981,126 in September, down 135,161 compared with September last year (a decline of 12.1 pct) and down 6,018 compared with August 2017 (a decline of 0.6 pct).

The number of employed people totaled 3,800,254, up 105,773 compared with September 2016 (an increase of 2.9 pct) and up 9,980 compared with August this year (up 0.3 pct). The number of people out of work totaled 3,223,768 in September, down 4,760 compared with September 2016 and down 6,694 from August. The unemployment rate among women was 25.3 pct (27.6 pct in September 2016), while among men it was 16.8 pct (19.6 pct last year).

The 15-24 age group recorded the highest unemployment rate (39.5 pct in September from 45 pct in September 2016), followed by the 25-34 age group (24.2 pct from 29.9 pct), the 35-44 age group (18.8 pct from 19.0 pct), the 55-64 age group (17.8 pct from 18.2 pct), the 45-54 age group (16.4 pct from 18.9 pct) and the 65-74 age group (11.2 pct from 14.3 pct).

Among the country’s regions, Epirus-Western Macedonia recorded the highest unemployment rate (25.6 pct in September from 27.6 pct in September 2016), followed by Macedonia-Thrace (21.8 pct from 13.9 pct), Attica (21.2 pct from 22.3 pct), Peloponnese-Western Greece-Ionian Islands (20.7 pct from 23.6 pct), Thessaly-Central Greece (19.6 pct from 24.9 pct), Aegean (16.4 pct from 17.7 pct) and Crete (14.6 pct from 23.1 pct).
